This piece depicts an Olmec colossal head in bas-relief, a distinct type of monumental stone sculpture created by the ancient Olmec Civilization of Mesoamerica. These monuments were carved primarily during the Preclassic period, dating from at least 1200 BCE to 400 BCE. The sculptures are famous for depicting mature individuals with fleshy cheeks, flat noses, and full lips. Each discovered head features a unique, helmet-like headdress, leading scholars to believe they represent specific rulers or powerful leaders rather than generic gods. There are 17 confirmed historic heads carved from single basalt boulders. They can weigh up to 40 tons and stand over 10 feet tall.
