THEOPHANY

Theophany captures a playful, nostalgic scene of toddlers interacting—some turned forward, others showing their backs—emphasizing themes of childhood innocence, brotherhood, and community.

Theophany refers to a visible manifestation of a deity or the divine to humankind, look closely at the composition, that theme is beautifully and deliberately woven into the scene. Within the relief sculpture, the physical interactions of the children create a subtle narrative of spiritual discovery. 

The Second Child from the Left: This toddler faces away, raised arm explicitly pointing a single index finger upward toward the sky. The Fourth Child (Second from the Right): This child mirrors the gesture, looking back and pointing directly upward. Positioned between them, the middle child looks directly outward at the viewer with an expression of wide-eyed awe and wonder, reacting to what the others are signaling. In folk art and religious iconography, children are frequently used as symbols of pure, uncorrupted innocence. 

By having the children point upward in unison, this piece uses the classic motif of a theophany—suggesting that the children are witnessing, recognizing, or signaling a divine presence or a heavenly manifestation that is hidden from the adult world.
